The Eclectic One

…Because labels are a poor substitute for thinking

The torture apologists never stop…And neither does their cowardice

Posted by Bill Nance on December 18, 2008

I was as horrified as anyone else by the 9/11/2001 attacks on the U.S.

But lets keep this in bloody perspective shall we? The British lost over 50,000 civilians in London during the blitz, and in spite of having many German spies as prisoners, prisoners, who were subject to the death penalty  under the Geneva accords, never resorted to torture. They were able to turn many of these spies to their own cause, and countless bits of critical intelligence was extracted from them without so much as raising a hand to them.

The U.S. on the other hand, loses 3,000 civilians to an attack and all of a sudden we’re out for blood and to Hell with the laws of civilized society and 230 years of tradition.

To make the point crystal clear, those who support torture, even of the despicable scum known as al Quaeda, are cowards.

Let there be no mistake. Compromising basic principles of humanity and lawful conduct, agreed to us by multiple international conventions, is not merely a convenience. Either you’re an apologist for this tactic, meaning you’re such a pussy you fear some big bad terrorist more than you fear losing your national soul, (read coward) or you’re not. There is no middle ground. You either compromise freedom and decency for imagined safety, or you don’t.

So let the torture apologists continue to talk about a ticking time bomb scenario that has never, and will never happen. But let the the rest of us, those who value whatever souls we believe in, call them what they are:

A prime example of this cowardice can be seen about minute nine on this video, but be sure to listen to it all. A torture apologist makes an argument that would allow the torure of any American captured with valuable intellgence with legal impunity, including “using a blowtorch” on them.

To paraphrase this disgusting little wretch, who, by the way, has never worn a uniform a day in his life, who has never placed himself in harm’s way, but wants to torture people in my name:

He thinks it’s perfectly ok for us to torture any uniformed member of a foreign army “if they present a threat to the U.S.”

This is where torture leads us. It’s never just about one instance. It’s a policy or it is not. Once you allow it in one place it becomes the rule.

One word people:

Buck the fuck up. We have 300,000,000 people in thios country. If we take some casualties in a war, so be it. There are worse things than death. Dishonor and cowardice are two of them.

Tell the chickenhawks and fascists to take a flying leap. Enough of this nonsense. And to Hell with the wussies making excuses for it.
