Why is an active duty combat brigade of the U.S. Army being deployed in the U.S.?

Posted by Bill Nance on September 26, 2008

Glenn Greenwald has an article in salon that is downright scary.

The Juice:

For more than 100 years — since the end of the Civil War — deployment of the U.S. military inside the U.S. has been prohibited under The Posse Comitatus Act (the only exceptions being that the National Guard and Coast Guard are exempted, and use of the military on an emergency ad hoc basis is permitted, such as what happened after Hurricane Katrina). Though there have been some erosions of this prohibition over the last several decades (most perniciously to allow the use of the military to work with law enforcement agencies in the “War on Drugs”), the bright line ban on using the U.S. military as a standing law enforcement force inside the U.S. has been more or less honored — until now.

And what is this combat brigade doing on its active assignment to North Command?

From the Army Times article:

“The 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team has spent 35 of the last 60 months in Iraq patrolling in full battle rattle, helping restore essential services and escorting supply convoys.

Now they’re training for the same mission — with a twist — at home.

Beginning Oct. 1 for 12 months, the 1st BCT will be under the day-to-day control of U.S. Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command, as an on-call federal response force for natural or man-made emergencies and disasters, including terrorist attacks.”

So let’s get this straight:

This president has authorized torture, unilaterally attempted to do away with Habeus Corpus, and now wants a brigade combat team to be deployed to the U.S. to act as a “Federal Response Force.”

Response to what? Like, maybe election results he doesn’t like? Ok, maybe that’s a tad extreme, but still you have to wonder what on earth is going on? It’s time for a new broom to sweep away the mess of this unbridled power grab on the part of the executive. Whoever wins in November, congress MUST act to reverse these power grabs completely and without exception.

I don’t care if every granny in the country has to go without her social security check and the troops in Iraq stop getting paid on time. Congress has got to act on this or we will find ourselves living in a dictatorship and wonder how it happened.

This is serious. It’s dead serious. It’s time to stop mucking around. I don’t care if you call yourself liberal, conservative or pinko. The federal government and in particular a single man occupying the White House must not be allowed to have this kind of authority.

Call your congress critters now!

Good article. I think the situation is beyond calling congress as we witness a government completely impotent when it comes to holding the executive branch accountable. If it can get to this point without as much as a peep from our so called representetives, its scary to envision how much more farther this thing will go.
