Creeping Fascism watch part 2

Posted by Bill Nance on August 22, 2008

Well it seems idiocy and abuse of authority isn’t limited to big cities.

The mayor of little Clayton, California, pop. 10,700, has ordered police to shut down a vegetable stand operated by 11-year-old Katie Lewis and her 3-year-old sister.

The reason: Zoning…. Or was it Traffic congestion? Or, no, wait they meant public safety. No, not that, it’s um, hey what are they going to sell next? Eggs and chickens? (the horror!) It seems Mayor Gregg Manning can’t decide just how it’s a bad thing for these tykes to make a buck, but he knows it’s just BAD.

The Juice:

“They may start out with a little card-table and selling a couple of things, but then who is to say what else they have. Is all the produce made there, do they make it themselves? Are they going to have eggs and chickens for sale next?”

Apparantly the good mayor neglected to take a logic course before he took office, or he wouldn’t try to use a logical fallacy to justify sticking it to kids trying to make a few dollars with a vegetable stand. Just for good measure, lemonade stands are also illegal in the Third Reich City of Clayton.

Adding insult to injury, Manning calls the girls..well read it for yourself:

“I wish everyone would follow the rules and not be just self-centered,” said Manning.

Yep, those little kids are just selfish brats. How dare they exercise a little initiative and gumption!

I would tend to side with the girls and let them sell their stuff. The mayor sounds like an ass but he may have a legitimate concern about public health issues. Another possible pitfall for the girls or their parents is the possibility of being sued. It’s a shame that people have to be concerned about that; but in our deranged litigation obsessed society it is something to consider.

Public health concerns about vegetables purchased from two kids at a veggie stand in front of their house? If you don’t wash your veggies thoroughly, you virtually deserve to get salmonella.(And it’s unlikely to the point of ridiculousness that you would get it from a home garden).

But, if you insist on eating unwashed veggies from a roadside stand, you get no sympathy from me. This is called evolution, wherein the stupid are gradually culled, and it’s GOOD thing.

As for the possibilities of litigation, that’s none of the government’s damned business.

My beef is with overstretching of government authority and with common decency. Police and prosecutors have discretion in enforcing the law, and this is a good example of why such discretionary powers are needed. -Zero tolerance is for fools.
