The Eclectic One

…Because labels are a poor substitute for thinking

Woot!

It looks like Texas is going to allow licensed and trained teachers to carry concealed weapons at their schools.

AUSTIN ā€” Gov. Rick Perry said Monday that local school districts should be able to decide whether to allow concealed weapons on their campuses.

“I’m pretty much a fan that if you’ve been trained, if you are registered, then you ought to be able to carry a weapon,” Perry said.

He was asked about the policy of a small school district west of Wichita Falls, which may be the first to allow employees who are licensed to carry concealed handguns to bring their weapons to the district’s lone 110-student, K-12 campus. -Link-

As I noted to friends after the Columbine shooting: “I wonder how many kids’ lives would have been saved by just ONE armed teacher with a CCW.”

It seems that FINALLY, someone in authority has come to the same conclusion.

These are the facts people: If your school, business, home or whatever is even NEXT DOOR to a police station, and you have the most atentive, best-trained police force in the world standing by waiting for your call, an armed intruder intent on killing you or someone else will have all the time they need to finish the job long before the cops can do anything about it. This isn’t the fault of the police, it’s not the fault of poor gun control, it’s simply a fact. And pretending otherwise is living in a fantasy world.

I have no idea what’s up with all the school shootings and office rampages over the last couple of decades. I don’t know what causes them, or why they seem to be increasing in number, and frankly, neither does anyone else.

But one thing I DO know, is that an armed citizen who is properly trained at least has a CHANCE at defending themselves.

I’m not some chest-thumping macho man on this issue. If an armed man gets the drop on you and intends to kill you, I don’t care if you’re Deadeye Dan or Wyatt Earp. Chances are, you’re screwed. But if you are armed and properly trained, you at least have the chance to do something besides beg for mercy. That’s the difference between being a man or woman, and being a sheep.
